KPI and Metrics web part
Love the look; just wish there was an ability to connect each metric to Power BI to keep it updated in real-time, without having to manually update
No screenshot…just describing the enhancement.
Ideally, there might be a toggle for each included metric that optionally allows you to connect to a URL or data source that would keep the metric updated in real-time, rather than it needing to be done manually. Or leave the toggle off if you want to continue updating the metrics manually if that’s preferred. Some metrics change frequently, whereas others might not.
No sketch or mockup at this time.
Eliminate staff from having to keep the metrics updated manually, particularly for metrics that change frequently and need to reflect real-time (or near real-time) changes.
Thank you for posting this suggestion! Lots of people mention this request, so thank you for taking time to submit this here.
Your requirements are clear on the high level.
PowerBI is a complex product, so we’d like to work out a few details with you, if that’s ok.
Background
Power BI typically publishes reports, and those can be embedded into SharePoint using the Power BI web part (built in with SharePoint).
Typical setup goes like this:
- Power BI report is built using data from a variety of sources (SQL, Excel, Dataverse, etc.).
- The report is published to the Power BI Service (app.powerbi.com).
- The Power BI web part in SharePoint Online embeds the report using its embed URL.
- The web part pulls from the Power BI Service, not the original data source (like SQL or Excel).
- Data refreshes are handled within Power BI, based on configured refresh schedules or DirectQuery/live connection, not in SharePoint.
For this to work users must have Power BI Pro or Premium per user licenses to view the embedded report (unless the workspace is in a Premium capacity).
Here are few questions from our side:
- Are you looking to pull raw data from a Power BI dataset instead of the report (because reports can be embedded already, though may not look pretty like Origami KPI web part)?
- Would each user have Power BI Pro or Premium license?
Thanks for the questions! You are correct that our desire would be to use the Origami KPI web part because it looks so much better, in my opinion. The KPI web part is very clean and the styling fits with the rest of the Origami web parts. Also, in our case all employees in our organization are licensed under the M365 E5 license, so everyone has a Power BI Pro license. I hope this helps!
Thank you for clarifying! We will send this to engineering for assessment and architecture, and will post a response here about the next steps.
Great news!
The BETA version of this new integration will be ready this week. Would you be interested in participating in BETA program for this web part? If so, please email support to help you get started.
Amazing! Yes, we would love to be part of the BETA program. I’ll email support. Thank you!
