High quality images in NewsCenter webpart

In the NewsCenter webpart, the news thumbnail images displayed on our homepage are larger (375px) then the thumbnail sourced (300px) which results in a pixellated thumbnail.

Also, it seems like the 300px thumbnails generated by sharepoint are losing a lot of quality. Would it be possible for Origami to source a different thumbnail size for the NewsCenterWebpart?

The native Sharepoint news publication webpart sources thumbnails at 400px+ and the quality is much better.

Origami News Center takes thumbnail images from either Page Details (low-res if uploaded) or Banner Image (high-res).

When you upload Page Details image, they are compressed even though you have uploaded a better quality image. If you use a stock photo in Page Details, they are not compressed.
This is by design in SharePoint and Origami web part is not able to interject and somehow get at the higher resolution image when it was already compressed by SharePoint.

The reason it might appear that out of the box web part image is better is because tiles are half the size, see the size difference below:

With that web recommend these solutions:

  • Use stock photo or link to photo from page details. This will preserve high res. Uploaded photos are compressed.
  • Use Banner image on the page which doesn’t go through the same compression step as Page Detail section.

The hi-resolution imaged used with that feature uses the banner image, which we cannot use since our news are all streamlined with the same banner image. Then our news all look the same on the NewsCenter, which isn’t what we want.

We understand that at the moment, the News Center web part can only change the image source using the high-resolution toggle option, which pulls from the banner image or the first image on the page. There isn’t currently a way to select different SharePoint-generated thumbnail formats based on web part size, as the native SharePoint news web part does. However we are not using the banner like this.

The native sharepoint news webpart uses the thumbnail image generated in different formats to display depending on the size of the webpart, would it be possible to do the same?
